Other Info:
Wembley Stadium opened to the public on 28th April 1923 and a running track existed here from then to 1927 before being used for greyhound racing and speedway but was rebuilt specifically for the 1948 Olympic Games. It was dug up straight afterwards with the redgra being used to construct the Eton Manor track at Leyton. Since then it has mainly been used as the national football stadium and for pop concerts. The last serious competitive fixture to be staged at the original stadium was an England football international in 2000 as the whole stadium is going to be demolished in 2001 and then rebuilt by about 2004. There were plans to include a track to host the World Athletics Championships in 2005 but after much deliberation it was announced on 18th February 2001 that the stadium may not be ready in time and so the idea has been rejected and so the championships will be staged at the original planned venue of Pickett's Lock after all. However the possibility of a track being included in the new stadium has not been dismissed as the stadium plans are still to be finalised.
