Other Info:
There is an advert in Bell's Life of 4th June 1881 which mentions the opening of this track which was referered to as the new athletic grounds, Taunton. It was cinder 440y in length, eighteen feet wide and had a 150y straight. There is mention on www.cricket.org of Somerset playing cricket here at what was originally called the Athletic (County) Ground since 1882. The OS map from 1889 shows that there was a cycle track around the County Cricket Ground which still exists today so this was clearly the place. The track, which was in later years used for greyhound racing, was grassed over in the 1970s.
