Other Info:
This track is immediately next to the Etihad Stadium (formerly City of Manchester Stadium) and was built to be the warm up track for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The track was unveiled by Diane Modahl on 18th October 2001 and is now used by local clubs for training and competition and forms part of the North West section of the English Institute of Sport (EIS). The main contractor for the track was Blakedown and it has a Polytan surface. There is also an indoor straight next to the track. The track was first thought to be used for a race on 25th May 2002 when the NoEAA U17 1500 steeplechase was held here having been switched from the City of Manchester Stadium. In 2003-4 seating capacity for about 6000 was added and a vaulted roof erected over almost half of the stadium. However the seating plan is a little odd as Rob Whittingham notes on www.britishathletics.info - "There is limited seating in the home straight, only four rows of seats in some sections. Similarly there are a limited number of seats in the back straight, again only four or six rows. However, there is a large stand on the first bend with more than 2000 seats in a block which does not follow the curve of the track. On the third bend about a quarter of the seats have been removed for the diamond screen to be erected for the 2004 AAA Championships. A quick count gave less than 5000 spectator seats available. It should be realised that the new venue is a football stadium! It is understood that Manchester City reserves will use it in the winter."
