Other Info:
The track was opened on 6th May 1967 by Alderman Leslie Lever and was followed by a meeting which featured Olympic miler and British record holder Alan Simpson & Britain's number one sprinter Barry Green. The track was home to the Manchester & District Lads Club Harriers. It is still there but has not been used for many years and is now totally overgrown with many trees growing on the track and is thus unusable. An aerial photo taken in 1995 showed that the cinder track surface was basically still intact but that the field-event facilites were starting to become overgrown. Mellands Sports Centre is adjacent to the track on Mount Road, MANCHESTER, M18 7QR, telephone 0161 224 2535 and the connection with the Lads Club is still there as it used by the local branch of the National Association of Clubs for Young People.
