In 1973 the track was described in a Sports Council report as being sub standard and partly derelict. The report also recommended that it should be abandoned which is what happened as it had definitely been grassed over by 1987. The track was slightly misshapen as the southerly bend which roughly followed the line of trees in the south of the park was much wider than the northern bend. The outline of the track can still just about be seen on an aerial photo of the area (follow the UK Street Map (Street Map) link). The area is now a small park called Down Lane Park with 2 grass football pitches. It may have been renamed from Down Lane Recreation Ground as the latter is shown on A-Z and Collins maps. Curiously the track is still shown on the latest A-Z maps and was shown on OS maps until the 1987 edition.
