Other Info:
The stadium opened in 1932 and was principally used for greyhound racing and speedway. However in both the 1936 and 1939 AAA handbooks, it mentions that the stadium can be used for athletics training. It is not known whether any events took place here. In about 1995, a £12M stand/restaurant was built and the stadium was then called the London Stadium, Hackney. However the company, London Stadium Hackney Ltd., that owned the stadium went out of business in December 1997 and the stadium is now derelict. Planning permission to convert the stadium into a multi-leisure facility was turned down in December 2000 but it is believed that the site is to be used for the 2012 Olympics. The greyhound track was 430m with long straights and had well banked bends. Speedway took place on a circuit inside the greyhound track. There are some pictures of the active stadium during a 1995 speedway meeting and some prior to the 1995 development on the Speedway Plus website (London Stadium and Waterden Road links).
