Other Info:
The track originally opened on 27 Aug 1955 by Jim Peters and consisted of a cinder track and asphalt cycle velodrome and was called the Gateshead Youth Stadium. It was upgraded to a 3M tartan synthetic track with opening meeting on 3rd Aug 1974 in which Brendan Foster broke the world 3000m record. The track was resurfaced in 1982 with Resisport & in 1989 with Spurtan V. The track was most recently resurfaced in 2003. A more detailed history of the track is provided in a leaflet obtainable from the Stadium. There is also a 4 lane 91m training & warm-up straight with field-event facilities and an indoor straight. There is an information page about the stadium on the Gateshead council website. A better indoor track which will be one of the regional indoor athletics centres of the English Institute of Sport is being built to the east of the stadium.
