Other Info:
This is not an official running track but could effectively be used as one. It is essentially a largely oval perimeter track, now effectively about 430m in length, around the grass rugby pitch used by Falmouth RFC. It is reported that 200m of it is a good tarmac surface with a slight camber on one of the bends and the rest is a dirt path in pretty solid condition. On what could be thought of as first bend by the main entrance, you have to pick your own line as it has been extended into a car park. The pictures are from a visit in 2001 when there used to be stand on the opposite straight to the one now past the main pavilion. That appears to have been demolished in the early 2010s. The track is shown as a fully oval "cycle track" in an early 1900s OS map and this "Grand Stand" is also shown in another map with the infield depicted as a Recreation Ground. It suggests the track was probably 440 yards. Cycling events were reported to have been held in Falmouth in the past so presume here but this track may only ever have been a cycle one not also a running one and explains the slight banking. That said, Falmouth was the venue of Anthony Endean's 7.06 LJ on 16 Jul 1958 which is in the UK all-time list but may not have been here. Bill Green reports that there was an 'Area Schools' meet at Falmouth in June 1958 and a meet in 1962 at the Falmouth Docks Sports Association Ground. Both of these may well have been held on temporary grass tracks.
