Other Info:
This impressive £6M facility opened in April 1999 and was officially opened by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh on May 24th 1999. It was built on the site of Eton College's track which was originally built by hand by Bill Bowles in about 1960 and was 6 lane cinder with 4 straights. Parts of the 1981 film Chariots of Fire were filmed on the cinder track. It was upgraded to a 6 lane all round Spurtan BS synthetic track in the summer of 1989. The College still own the land but it was built as a joint use facility on behalf of the Thames Valley Athletics Centre Trust which consists of Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Slough Borough Council and Eton College. Additional came funding from the Lottery Sports Fund. There is a large grandstand which incorporates an indoor straight, club rooms and a gym. Mansell were the main contractors with Herbert J. Stribling & Partners the architects and McBains Cooper providing the quantity surveying. The surface of the outdoor track was Spurtan BS and was laid by Balsam (UK) Ltd. It was resurfaced with Polytan and relined by Athletic Markings Ltd. in Sept 2002. At this time, a new DT/HT circle was installed and the old one in the overflow area dismantled.
