Other Info:
The ground dates back from the 1870s and the cycle track which surrounded the running track was built in 1879. The running track was built in 1962 at the same as the floodlights. The track and the banked asphalt cycle velodrome fell out of regular use in the early 1990s and by 2000 were derelict and clearly not used. There used to be field-event facilities but none were left. It was clearly quite an impressive venue in its time as there were rows of concrete terracing on both bends but these were badly overgrown by 2000 but the ground was still fully floodlit. There used to be a covered stand on the straight nearer to the adjacent Coventry Technical College but this had been removed. There was however a small derelict building on this straight set down from the top of the cycle track which may have been toilets. The surface of the running track in 2000 was largely overgrown with grass but appears to have been redgra. The infield was fairly short grass but was not used for anything. The cycle track was in reasonable condition and could actually have been used with caution. The exact length of the running track is not known but the cycle one was 402m which would mean it was about 350m. The ground is owned by the city council but has been leased to Coventry Rugby Club for their new ground. The plan is to build a good clubhouse, shops at one end, and a grandstand/terracing on each side giving a 10,000 seat capacity. The site was cleared in 2003 and construction is well underway. There are more photos of the site and further details on the plans for the stadium on the Coventry Rugby Club site.
