Other Info:
A running track is shown here on the A-Z and on the OS 1:10,000 map but the site is now just a grass pitch although there is a synthetic LJ/TJ runway and HJ area. Both are clearly disused as the sandpit has been grassed over and the HJ area is badly worn. It is uncertain what surface the track was but it was probably cinder as the outline of a track can be seen on the aerial shot of the ground from the Millennium Map. It is assumed that the site was not considered viable for a synthetic track - there are fairly new houses on Brick Kiln Way which runs parallel to the field and which are not on the OS map 1:10,000 map. Braintree RFC are based in the adjacent field. The track may have been location of the Vernon Searle Memorial throws meets at Robswood Sports Arena/Ground, Cressing Rd from 1983-91 which is probably in the period before the synthetic track at the Leisure Centre was built. In 1980-82, the meeting was billed as taking place at Alec Hunter High School, Stubbs Lane which is next to the old Crittall track.
