The opening meeting of the track was on 25th August 1923. The ground was also used from the start by Braintree Town FC. Athletics meetings took place here until at least the 1960s. The track fell into disuse in the 1970s and Braintree Town FC starting to build over it from the late 1970s. The ground is now called Cressing Road Stadium and there are grandstands on what would have been both straights. A very detailed book on the history of the ground has been written by Jon Weaver called Braintree Town FC's Cressing Road Stadium - A 75 Year History.
