Other Info:
The track was part of Blaydon Comprehensive School which closed in 1999 and the school buildings were demolished in 2000. The school swimming pool, sports hall and changing facilities next to the track have been retained and Gateshead Council have said that they intend to turn the site into a leisure centre and that the track would be retained and enhanced and run as part of a borough-wide community facility. Regardless of this, the track is however maintained in good condition and the lanes are marked out in the summer. The infield of the track is an astroturf football/hockey pitch. The track was moved slightly and rotated 90 degrees as according to the OS 1:10,000 the track was originally situated immediately southeast of the school site with the straights parallel to the A694 (grid reference NZ 199626) whereas now it is at 90 degrees to the original track and immediately east of the school site with the straights parallel to the A1. The old & the new locations do overlap slightly and the resiting seems to have been done to accomodate the interchange between the A1 and A694 which now occupies part of the site of the old track. The track was thought to have been used by Blaydon Harriers in the 1970s and 80s. There is car parking space next to the track beside the sports hall.
