Other Info:
A cinder cycle track was built here in 1888 in the field next to the present synthetic running track. Shortly after and by at least 1900 a banked cycle track was built and a cinder 440y running track inside it was added. There was also a sprint track in the infield by 1900. The running track was used by Roger Bannister in the 1950s and was used by Queen's Park Harriers before they moved to Willesden. It was converted to 400m at some point and is thought to have had 6 lanes but possibly more in the home straight. The tracks existed until 1987 when they were grassed over and was replaced by an adjacent synthetic track. The field is now a cricket pitch and the only sign of the tracks is the grass bank parallel to Grantully Road which was part of the cycle track. A plaque on the side of the pavilion facing the old cinder track was unveiled by Roger Bannister on 10th September 2000 to commemorate the fact that he used to train on the track.
