A succession of tracks existed here in the late 1800s and early 1900s in locations believed to be different to the current synthetic track. By 1862 there was a grass track which was marked around a cricket pitch. By about 1873 and certainly by 1875 there was a gravel track with squarish corners. An oblate (slightly flattened circle) track was built in 1880 around a lake and existed until 1896 and was orientated north-south. The exact locations of the pre 1896 tracks are under investigation. In 1896 a running track around a banked concrete cycle track was built which existed until 1936 and was situated where the Sports Centre is now. Athletics returned to Crystal Palace in 1964 when the cinder track on the site of the current synthetic one was opened. The details of this track can be found here.
